Aggie Mile & 5K Recap

Last Saturday, 05/17/14, the inaugural Aggie Mile & 5K was held on the Texas A&M University campus.  This boasted the top 40 boys and girls from TX high schools that qualified for the fastest mile.  The 5K was open for all participants, which I ran.  Nice start to the day with pleasant temps (64 degrees), just a bit windy later on.  The course was around the golf course and through the campus.  I took this at a pleasant pace for me; just wanted to enjoy my last 5K I've signed up for until a few months down the road.  I finished at 31:05.  They had the best oatmeal cranberry cookies from Napa Flats for a post race snack....YUM!  The best part of this race was watching the top high school athletes run the one mile.  Very impressive young ladies and gentlemen!!  All of the boys finished with a 4:XX mile, and the girls with a 5:XX mile.  They were all within seconds of each other.  There was great crowd support for these athletes too with spectators lined up along both sides of the final stretch of the course clapping and cheering.  I look forward to next years race to run the 5K and watch more awesome athletes!
Also, here's an inspiring story from the 5K that aired on our local news station KBTX......just goes to prove you can do anything you set your mind to!!

New Adventure

I'm bored with my normal workouts, except for my running.  I have been following the lolo boot camp app for almost 3 years now.  Don't get wrong, I really like this app, but after doing the same thing for a couple of years now I felt like I needed something different.  Plus, I know I wasn't giving it my all because I knew the routines so well.  So I took the plunge and joined a local facility, BCS Fitness, for semi-private personal training.  I go three days a week (Monday, Tuesday and Thursday) after work.  Let me tell you I obviously was NOT utilizing all of my muscles in my previous workouts.......can you say SORE!!  Mainly my quads are killing me!  I don't need to sit; I'll just stand until the soreness goes away:/  The workouts are 30 minutes, but they pack a lot of punch!  We are in  two groups of 3 to 4 with a dedicated trainer supervising our workouts with a floating trainer going between the two groups. The owner, Brad, and trainers are nice and super motivated.  We do a warm up and then given the workout for the day with a stretch session at the end.  The 30 minutes goes by really fast....which is good for me because I can get easily distracted.  I've signed up for 3 months and then I will dedicate my time to half marathon training which starts in July.  I feel with what I will learn from my sessions and my boot camp workouts, I can supplement on my off days from my running schedule.
Here I am with week 1 down....not sure if that's a smile or a grimace

Hooty Hustle 5K Recap

This should more aptly be titled.......The Hills Have Hills!
This was a local 5K last Saturday, May 10, in Anderson, TX.  It was held by the Anderson-Shiro Elementary School to raise funds for new playground equipment.  I felt obliged to sign up since I use their track for weekday runs, and plus I have the cutest niece & nephew that go to school there.  Not to mention, it's about 10 minutes from my house!  This was their 2nd annual 5K.  They have had nice turn outs both times.
Well on to the run.......I clearly remember why I cussed the course last year......HILLS that are never ending!  Anderson, much like Rome, it built upon seven hills, and I experienced each of them!  It seemed like every time you crested one hill, you took a turn and up the next hill you went.  I swear the hills had hills if that's possible!?!?  It is a pretty run through the charming little town.  We got to run beside the stately courthouse and down the town's main street with the old buildings.  This was not one of my best runs....it wasn't so much the hills, but I just didn't feel "it".  I started off strong, but that went by the wayside about halfway through.  They did have volunteers at each turn and even three water stops along the way.....which was much needed since the morning was nice and humid.  Come to find out the course wasn't exactly 3.1, it was 3.25 miles!  I ended up finishing at 33:28 and placing 3rd in my age group with men/women combined.  I was surprised since I felt it was not my best performance.  First thing I said to my husband after finishing was "not doing this one again".  I'm sure I may reconsider next year??
Waiting to start
And off we go.......
So glad to be finished!
3rd place in my age group!
